China’s electric vehicle (EV) market is buzzing with changes. BYD, the largest EV maker in the country, faced its first dip in monthly deliveries in July 2025. They shipped 341,030 units, down from 377,628 in June, reflecting tough competition and a price war. Although BYD is still leading, this decline marks a significant shift after months of steady growth.
The situation isn’t just affecting BYD. Other major players like Li Auto and Nio also reported delivery drops. Li Auto sold 30,731 vehicles in July, down 39.7% from last year, and Nio saw a slight decline, delivering 21,017 units.
Interestingly, Xpeng broke records this month with 36,717 deliveries, continuing a strong streak of over 30,000 units for nine months. Companies like Xiaomi and Leapmotor also saw growth, indicating some bright spots in the market. Xiaomi’s new YU7 SUV launched in early July, driving its sales up more than 20%.
The ongoing price war started when BYD discounted several of its lower-end models by nearly 30% in May. This move prompted other manufacturers to adjust their pricing, leading to concerns among policymakers about excessive competition in the industry. Chinese leaders are now warning companies to ease the price cuts to maintain a healthier market.
In the midst of this competition, companies are focusing on innovation. Li Auto introduced its first fully electric SUV, the Li i8, while Nio launched the L90 model. These new releases might help them regain traction in a challenging market.
This landscape speaks volumes about the current state of the EV industry in China, which is surging ahead compared to years past. For instance, in 2021, EV sales were much lower, but as of now, consumer interests and technological advancements are paving the way for a robust future.
Overall, while BYD remains a leader, the competition is heating up. Analysts suggest that the coming months will be crucial for all these brands. Adapting to changing market dynamics and consumer preferences will be key to their survival and success.
