China’s Honor Announces $10 Billion AI Investment, Strengthening Global Partnerships with Google

In Barcelona, Honor announced a bold plan to invest $10 billion in artificial intelligence over the next five years. This move comes as part of a bigger strategy to grow its presence outside of China. They’ve also strengthened their partnership with Google.

Since separating from Huawei in 2020 due to U.S. sanctions, Honor has aimed to compete in the high-end smartphone market, joining giants like Apple and Samsung. Their market share outside China is growing, increasing from 1.7% in 2023 to 2.3% in 2024.

An Honor representative shared that part of the investment will focus on integrating AI into their devices. This includes creating advanced virtual assistants and a platform that allows various AI devices to connect and work together.

Additionally, some funds will be directed towards preparing for the era of Artificial General Intelligence, which refers to AI that could surpass human intelligence.

During the event, Honor showcased a prototype AI agent. For instance, a user could request a restaurant reservation with specific preferences, and the AI made it happen. Honor is collaborating with Google and Qualcomm to develop this technology, but no release date has been set.

Honor is also leveraging features from Google’s Gemini AI system for its devices. They committed to supporting their Magic series smartphones with Android and security updates for seven years, a pledge made by only a few manufacturers like Google and Samsung, showcasing their dedication to the Android platform.

While many companies use Android, only a few have a close connection with Google like Samsung and Xiaomi. Honor is now aligning itself with these major players.

Ben Wood, a chief analyst at CCS Insight, noted that Honor’s deeper partnership with Google is significant. Previously, Google had been cautious with Chinese tech firms regarding advanced AI, but this partnership elevates Honor to compete closely with top brands like Samsung and Google’s own Pixel devices.
