In a fascinating turn of events, China’s Tianwen-1 orbiter has captured stunning images of the interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS from Mars. This comet is particularly special because it is believed to be around 10 billion years old. Such objects could tell us valuable information about the early universe.
3I/ATLAS was first spotted on July 1, traveling at an impressive speed of 58 kilometers per second. Its journey through the Solar System has intrigued astronomers, as it’s only the third confirmed interstellar object we’ve encountered, following ʻOumuamua and Borisov.
However, when 3I/ATLAS moved behind the Sun, Earth-based telescopes lost sight of it. During this time, the European Space Agency’s Mars Express and ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter managed to take images of it. When it re-emerged, Tianwen-1 provided even more detailed pictures.
The Tianwen-1 orbiter, which entered Mars orbit in February 2021, had a challenge. Its cameras were designed to capture images of the Martian surface, not distant comets. Yet, the team behind Tianwen-1 rose to the occasion. They conducted simulations and adjustments to successfully photograph such a dim target—between 10,000 to 100,000 times fainter than Martian objects.
The images reveal the comet’s core and a hazy envelope of gas and dust. These features help astronomers understand its composition and behavior. Interestingly, 3I/ATLAS has shown signs of outgassing, which means it might be losing mass as it heats up near the Sun. Some speculated bizarre theories, even suggesting it could be an alien spacecraft, but these ideas have been dismissed by experts.
Dr. Lisa Kaltenegger, an astrophysicist at Cornell University, notes, “Interstellar objects like 3I/ATLAS offer a unique opportunity to study materials from other star systems, potentially shedding light on planet formation and the chemical makeup of other worlds.”
Now that the comet is back in view, telescopes on Earth and the upcoming ESA JUICE orbiter, heading to Jupiter, will be watching closely.
