Chinese Taipei Sets Its Sights on Glory at the 2026 World Baseball Classic: A Thrilling Journey Ahead!

Chinese Taipei is gearing up for a big moment as they prepare for the World Baseball Classic Qualifier in February 2026. After winning the historic WBSC Premier12 2024 title, the team knows they must first earn their place at the Classic.

On February 3, manager Hao-Ju Tseng revealed his 36-man roster during the team’s camp at Taipei Dome, the venue for the upcoming qualifier. Tseng, who led the team to its first Premier12 victory, will have his entire coaching staff back. He named the standout player Chieh-Hsien Chen as the captain.

While Chen and catcher Lyle Lin are the only players returning from the Premier12 team, Tseng emphasized the need to rest many other players who finished their last season late. This gives younger talents a chance to shine.

Chinese Taipei submitted a 28-player roster but may make changes by February 15. Notably, shortstop Tsung-Che Cheng, who has played in the U.S. minor leagues, will miss the qualifier as he attends spring training.

Several players from MLB teams, like Po-Yu Chen and Tzu-Chen Sha from the Oakland Athletics, will join the roster. The pitching lineup includes prospects from both MLB and Nippon Professional Baseball, with experienced players like Yun-Wen Chen expected to take on critical roles.

Chinese Taipei recently faced challenges with their bullpen, especially since many pitchers are younger and less experienced internationally. Coach Yueh-Ping Lin noted the need for flexibility, suggesting that the team might use multiple pitchers in games if necessary.

Yu Chang, who was named MVP during the last World Baseball Classic, is set to lead the lineup. Tzu-Hao Chen is also making his national team debut after recovering from an injury and securing a landmark contract in the Chinese Professional Baseball League.

The team is expected to bring three catchers to support effective communication with pitchers from MLB teams. Lyle Lin will play a crucial role in this setup.

This Qualifier is significant for Chinese Taipei. In their last appearance in 2009, they faced tough outcomes but bounced back in 2012, successfully qualifying for the 2013 World Baseball Classic. They’ll aim for a similar outcome this time around.

Chinese Taipei begins their Qualifier journey on February 21 against Spain. They will also face South Africa and Nicaragua in group play, with the chance to advance to the World Baseball Classic at stake.
