A major winter storm is sweeping across the U.S., causing many people to stay home. As a result, the box office is taking a hit. This weekend’s revenue might be the lowest of the year, and it could even lag behind last year’s figures.
The new thriller Mercy, featuring Chris Pratt, is expected to lead the weekend box office. In this film, Pratt plays a man on trial for murdering his wife. He faces a unique twist: an artificial intelligence judge decides his fate. MGM Amazon Studios anticipates a $12.6 million opening, though some had hoped for around $15 million.
However, Mercy has more than just the weather to contend with. Critics haven’t been kind, and audience reactions have been lukewarm, reflected in its B- CinemaScore.
Despite these hurdles, Mercy has the distinction of being the first film to knock James Cameron’s Avatar: Fire and Ash off its five-week throne. Fire and Ash is likely to finish second with projected earnings of about $7 million, bringing its domestic total to around $380 million. Disney’s animated hit Zootopia 2 is expected to come in third, also garnering about $6 million and crossing the $400 million mark domestically.
The Housemaid, directed by Paul Feig and starring Sydney Sweeney and Amanda Seyfried, is performing well in its sixth weekend, projected to earn $6 million and amassing over $250 million globally.
On the other hand, the sequel 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple opened below expectations and is predicted to drop to fifth place, likely earning around $4.2 million this weekend, totaling just $21.4 million domestically.
Interestingly, films can see a box office boost after receiving top Academy Award nominations, a trend observed over the years. Marty Supreme, directed by Josh Safdie and produced by A24, has received nine nominations, including best picture and best actor for Timothée Chalamet. It’s set to land in sixth place this weekend with an estimated $3.5 million, dropping only 35% from last weekend.
Chloé Zhao’s Hamnet, another strong contender with eight nominations, has also performed well, aiming to finish in the top ten with $1.8 million, bringing its domestic total close to $18 million. The film initially started in select theaters before opening wide.
This weekend, a special 25th-anniversary rerelease of The Lord of the Rings trilogy is still drawing crowds. Each showing is expected to bring in about $14 to $15 million, attesting to the film’s lasting appeal.
As we await final numbers, it’s clear that both new releases and beloved classics are vying for attention, even in challenging weather conditions.
