Christian Brothers University in Memphis, Tennessee, has announced it will lay off 16 full-time faculty members by the end of the spring semester. This decision aims to achieve a 12:1 student-faculty ratio and follows the lifting of the school’s financial probation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC).
Br. Chris, the interim president, expressed optimism about this progress, stating, “We are encouraged by SACSCOC’s decision to lift our probation status, which is a significant milestone for our institution. However, this achievement is not the finish line.”
The university emphasized that the layoffs are part of a broader reorganization to improve its operating budget and adapt to changes in student enrollment. Importantly, no academic programs will close, and students can continue their majors with minimal disruption.
In November 2024, the university had already cut 20 non-faculty positions due to financial challenges. “We understand that any reduction in faculty is deeply painful for the CBU community,” Br. Chris added. “These decisions are not made lightly and were reached only after careful review of all alternatives.”
This situation reflects a larger trend in higher education where institutions face financial pressures and must adapt to fluctuating enrollment. According to a recent study by the National Student Clearinghouse, undergraduate enrollment in the U.S. decreased by more than 6% from 2020 to 2022, sparking institutions to rethink their staffing and program offerings.
As universities like Christian Brothers navigate these challenges, the impact on faculty and student experiences remains a critical concern, resonating across campuses nationwide.
