Christina Applegate is back home, recovering after a week in the hospital due to a kidney infection. The “Dead to Me” actress shared her experience on Tuesday with Entertainment Weekly, saying, “I was there seven days.”
During her hospitalization, Applegate recorded an episode of her podcast, MeSsy, alongside cohost Jamie-Lynn Sigler. She mentioned that she wasn’t sure what was wrong but assured her listeners that she would be fine. “I didn’t plan to do a podcast from the hospital,” she said. “But I need answers!”
Applegate revealed that she has faced many health challenges since her multiple sclerosis diagnosis in early 2021. Just three years later, she has been to the hospital over 30 times due to severe symptoms like pain and gastrointestinal issues. In her latest health scare, she traveled to Europe, but upon returning, her condition worsened. She felt intense stomach pain on her flight home, prompting her to seek answers at the hospital.
Her symptoms escalated when she experienced extreme pain on her right side, which made her fear a possible appendicitis. After a CT scan, doctors confirmed the kidney infection. At one point, they suspected a urinary tract infection, which Applegate joked about, claiming, “I have the cleanest vagina.”
Despite receiving treatment through IV antibiotics, Applegate felt there were still unanswered questions about her health. “They’re thinking it could be something else, but I don’t want to say what, because I don’t want it to sound scary,” she shared.
Supporting her during this time, Sigler, who also suffers from MS, expressed her sympathy. She admitted that handling such struggles can be tough, leading to moments of emotional release. As Applegate put it, “Sometimes, I fall into the nurse’s arms, just crying.”
Currently, Applegate describes her ongoing stomach issues as a “work in progress.” This situation underscores the ongoing challenges that many face with chronic illnesses, especially during times of heightened stress, like returning from trips or sudden changes in health.
The importance of listening to one’s body and seeking medical help cannot be overstated. It’s vital to look beyond surface symptoms and advocate for a deeper understanding of one’s health. Many people, including celebrities, are candid about their health struggles, and this transparency is crucial for raising awareness and fostering conversations.

In a world where health challenges can feel isolating, it’s heartening to see public figures like Applegate courageously sharing their stories. It reminds us we are not alone in our struggles.
