On January 13, 2025, in Bangkok, Professor Dr. Wilert Puriwat, the president of Chulalongkorn University, shared insights from the “Future of Jobs 2025” report. This research, a collaboration with the World Economic Forum, focuses on how the job market is expected to evolve from 2025 to 2030.

The report is based on a survey conducted among 1,000 employers, representing around 14 million workers in 22 industries across 55 countries. Here are some key findings:
- Technological advancements and the shift to sustainable practices are projected to generate 170 million new jobs.
- However, 92 million jobs may be lost due to automation and changing economic landscapes.
- Overall, there’s an anticipated net growth of 7%, translating to about 78 million new jobs worldwide.
Several factors are driving these changes in the workforce:
- Technological Change: Innovations like AI and robotics are reshaping job roles and the skills needed.
- Green Transition: Efforts to combat climate change will increase demand for roles in environmental engineering and renewable energy.
- Economic Uncertainty: Rising living costs and economic slowdowns create challenges in job security.
- Demographic Shifts: Aging populations in wealthy countries and a growing workforce in poorer regions will change labor dynamics.
- Geo-economic Fragmentation: Trade restrictions and geopolitical conflicts are affecting business operations.
Looking at skills, by 2030, around 40% of current skills will need to be updated. In Thailand, key skills will include AI, big data, analytical and creative thinking, as well as cybersecurity. Globally, the focus will still be on AI and big data, along with technological literacy.
Chulalongkorn University outlines five essential strategies to prepare the workforce in Thailand:
- Holistic Skill Transformation: Encouraging comprehensive upskilling across various fields.
- Future-Ready Organizations: Creating systems that support skill development continuously.
- Automation for Routine Tasks: Using automation to simplify repetitive jobs.
- Dynamic Work Roles: Supporting adaptability in job roles to meet changing requirements.
- Integration of Emerging Technologies: Leveraging new technologies to foster innovation.
Professor Dr. Puriwat stated that Chulalongkorn University aims to be a leader in AI education, shaping “Future Humans.” These individuals will not only excel in AI but also embody essential values, combining intelligence with a compassionate approach to technology that benefits society.
