Cinemark Unveils 70mm IMAX Screens Just in Time for Christopher Nolan’s Highly Anticipated ‘The Odyssey’

Cinemark is ramping up its offerings by adding new Imax screens, including the sought-after 70-millimeter film format. This expansion is part of a growing partnership with Imax, aimed at enhancing the cinematic experience just in time for Christopher Nolan’s highly anticipated movie, “The Odyssey,” set to hit theaters on July 17, 2026.

Cinemark will install three new 70mm film projection systems and upgrade four locations with Imax with Laser technology. This system boasts 4K laser projection for crystal-clear images and superior audio quality. The locations for the new 70mm screens include:

  • Cinemark Seven Bridges in Woodridge, Illinois
  • Cinemark Carefree Circle in Colorado Springs, Colorado
  • Cinemark Tinseltown in Rochester, New York

Currently, only about 30 theaters worldwide feature the Imax 70mm format, making this upgrade a significant step for fans of the big screen.

Rich Gelfond, CEO of Imax, emphasizes that this move enhances the value for both Cinemark and moviegoers. As premium formats gain popularity, driven by directors like Nolan and Denis Villeneuve, audiences are increasingly seeking the best viewing experiences. Nolan, in particular, is known for advocating the importance of watching films on the largest screens possible.

Cinemark’s CEO, Sean Gamble, highlighted this expansion as part of their dedication to offering unique cinematic experiences. By upgrading to the latest Imax technologies, they aim to attract more viewers and enhance loyalty.

This shift in the industry reflects a broader trend. Recent surveys show that nearly 60% of moviegoers prefer premium formats when choosing a theater. As audiences continue to seek richer experiences, the competition among theater chains to provide advanced viewing options grows more intense.

With “The Odyssey” being filmed entirely in Imax, the anticipation surrounding this movie may further drive interest in the new 70mm experience. As theaters evolve, the focus on high-quality visuals and sound is likely to shape the way we enjoy films for years to come.
