Next week, Inverness will host a significant gathering focused on building connections. The Highland Climate Conference, organized by the Highlands & Islands Climate Hub and backed by the Scottish Government, will take place at the Kingsmills Hotel on Wednesday.
This event will feature various speakers and panel discussions, along with local crafts and produce. The goal is to inspire teamwork towards a sustainable and vibrant Highland region.
Conference attendees will have a chance to take action by signing the Highland Charter for Climate, Nature, and Health. Joan Lawrie, chief executive of the Highlands and Islands Climate Hub, expressed excitement about bringing together different sectors. She believes that this is a vital step in addressing the climate emergency.
Joan said, “I’m looking forward to this inspiring day. It’s about finding ways we can work together to help our region move closer to net zero through a fair transition.”
The event will focus on four main themes: Place, People, Power, and Partnerships. Speakers include representatives from local communities, The Flow Country Partnership, Carbon Neutral Islands – Raasay, and more.
The overarching aim is to unite communities, public sectors, and private businesses to create a healthier climate for the Highlands.
Historically, community-led initiatives like this have proven effective. For example, during the 1997 Kyoto Protocol negotiations, community involvement showed how grassroots movements could influence environmental policies worldwide.
In recent surveys, about 75% of people in the Highlands express concern about climate change. This conference provides a platform for those voices to be heard and acted upon.
