COLDWATER, MI – The Coldwater City Council has taken steps to update fire codes for the growing number of food trucks. Fire Chief Dave Schmaltz shared that these changes will help the Coldwater Fire Department manage inspections more effectively using new software.
Fire Marshal Steve Trall mentioned that they aim to join a system already in use by fire inspectors in Southwest Michigan and Detroit. This will allow food trucks to get inspections in any participating city, ensuring they meet safety standards.
City Attorney Amanda O’Boyle stressed that these measures are crucial for protecting both the public and vendors. Safe food truck operations are important as they’ve become popular at local events and gatherings.
Interestingly, the average food truck generates around $300,000 in annual revenue, according to a report by Food Truck Nation. This popularity shows how essential safety regulations are to a booming industry. While the Coldwater Fire Department won’t charge fees for inspections, there is a small annual fee of $25 from the software company.
The City Council is expected to finalize these changes in their meeting on March 9. As food trucks continue to multiply, these updates will play a key role in keeping both customers and vendors safe.
