City of Cornwall Champions Innovative Climate Adaptation Plan for a Sustainable Future

The Council has backed the Climate Adaptation Plan, a strong strategy aimed at preparing our community for the effects of climate change. This plan, called Climate Resilient Cornwall (CRC), was created with help from Pinna Sustainability Inc. It builds on Cornwall’s previous Climate Action Plan, which focused on cutting greenhouse gas emissions.

Michael Fawthrop, General Manager of Infrastructure Planning and Municipal Works, highlighted the importance of adaptation: “This plan helps us face the climate impacts already hitting us, like flooding and extreme heat. It’s about making sure our community and infrastructure can handle these challenges.”

Mayor Justin Towndale echoed this sentiment, noting, “Our climate is changing. Winters are milder, and summers are hotter. This plan will prepare us for what lies ahead.”

Cariad Garratt from Pinna Sustainability Inc. shared key goals from the plan. These include improving emergency management during severe weather and making energy more affordable and reliable. The plan also aims to strengthen buildings’ climate resilience, protect community health, and ensure municipal infrastructure can withstand future challenges.

Feedback from city staff and local partners helped shape the 80-page report, which outlines actionable steps. For example, it suggests installing advanced heat control and cooling systems, such as green roofs and improved insulation, in municipal buildings.

Angela Parker, the City’s Sustainability Projects Coordinator, stressed the need for everyone to get involved: “This plan shows our community’s dedication to a sustainable future. Together, we can make Cornwall a safe and lively place for generations.”

Recent data from the International Panel on Climate Change warns that climate-related events will likely increase in severity. In fact, a 2021 survey found that 76% of Canadians are concerned about climate change, highlighting the need for local action like the CRC.

By focusing on practical solutions and community involvement, the Climate Adaptation Plan aims to create a future where Cornwall can thrive despite the challenges ahead. For more details on this initiative, check out cornwall.ca.
