Clark Atlanta University (CAU) is making big strides with the construction of a new student success center. This initiative, the first of its kind in 20 years, was officially announced in October 2023, and construction kicked off on May 15, 2025. University President George French Jr. expressed excitement, stating, “We are ready to go.”
The new center aims to enhance student support by housing advisors and tutors. It will also offer programs to improve study skills and help students adjust to campus life. French hopes this facility will improve both the quality and accessibility of resources for students, especially since there has not been new construction on campus for over two decades.
The project costs $12 million and is set to be completed by the fall of 2026. French mentioned the high demand for CAU, noting that this year saw 48,000 applicants vying for just 1,200 spots. The admitted students had an impressive average GPA of 3.71, underscoring the need for strong student services.
This momentous construction reflects a broader trend among historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs). As enrollment numbers soar at HBCUs, many are investing in new facilities and programs to meet student needs and enhance the educational experience. For instance, a recent report shows that enrollment in HBCUs increased by 27.6% over the past three years. Universities like CAU are responding by modernizing their campuses and adapting to the changing landscape of higher education.
Clark Atlanta University was formed in 1988 from the merger of Clark College and Atlanta University. It continues to play a vital role in educating students, offering various undergraduate and graduate degree programs. With this new construction project, CAU aims to further solidify its commitment to student success and academic excellence.
