Clemson University is making exciting progress on South Carolina’s first veterinary school, the Harvey S. Peeler Jr. College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM). Recently, they held a beam signing ceremony to celebrate the next steps in this major project.
“This beam signing isn’t just about construction; it marks a significant advancement for both Clemson and South Carolina,” Robert H. Jones, the university’s provost, shared. The new CVM aims to tackle the state’s veterinarian shortage and enhance animal and human health services.
Taking place four months after the groundbreaking, the ceremony included university officials, architects, and construction partners. The construction site is located near the Clemson University Equine Center and is designed to take full advantage of its picturesque surroundings. "There are a lot of windows to enjoy views of the forest," said founding dean Steven Marks. "Students will have the chance to step outside for a break, surrounded by nature."
The campus plans to feature seven structures, including the central CVM Hub, which will house classrooms, a clinic, and social spaces for students. According to recent updates, steel framing for various buildings is underway, and the CVM Hub should be enclosed by late 2025.
This new facility also has a personal touch. The beam is adorned with several signatures, including a tribute to Timothy R. Boosinger, who contributed significantly to the CVM’s planning but passed away earlier this year. Marks pointed out that recognizing Boosinger’s contributions made the event even more meaningful.
The CVM will offer advanced programs for veterinary students and is set to open its doors to students by fall 2026, contingent upon receiving accreditation from the American Veterinary Medical Association. This timeline highlights the importance of the project, as there’s a pressing need for veterinarians nationwide, with a reported shortage of over 40,000 veterinary professionals expected by 2030.
The new facility is anticipated to become a hub for veterinary education and research, with dedicated spaces for teaching anatomy, surgical skills, and even an ambulatory service for farm animals. This hands-on approach will allow students to gain vital practical experience.
Ultimately, the Harvey S. Peeler Jr. College of Veterinary Medicine represents a remarkable leap for Clemson and the veterinary field in South Carolina, embodying a commitment to education, community health, and animal welfare.
