Clemson University recently celebrated the groundbreaking of a new MUSC Health Center on February 6. This exciting project is in the C-1 parking lot and is now in Phase 3 of construction, taking up nearly half of the commuter lot.
The partnership between Clemson and the Medical University of South Carolina was announced back in July 2025. This new center will be a state-of-the-art facility, covering 90,000 square feet, designed to replace the outdated Redfern Health Center, which opened in 1969. Since then, the student body has grown significantly, making this upgrade essential for providing quality healthcare.
Currently, students can access free virtual urgent care through MUSC Health. When the new center opens, it will enhance these services even further. The facility will offer more space for counseling, a pharmacy, lab services, radiology, and an allergy immunization clinic. It will also expand student access to telehealth, which has become increasingly important in recent years.
Additionally, the center will feature a sports medicine and outpatient surgery center managed by Prisma Health Blue Ridge Orthopedics. With advanced imaging and a human performance research center, this project aims to create a comprehensive healthcare experience for students.
This ambitious project is backed by a 30-year ground lease with the Medical University Hospital Authority. The facility’s total cost is $71.2 million, supported by an $11.5 million grant from HSS’ Health Resources and Services Administration, according to Becker’s Hospital Review. MUSC will contribute $58.5 million, while Clemson will invest $3 million in site improvements, as reported by The State.

A recent study from the American College Health Association shows that mental health issues among students have surged, underscoring the need for comprehensive health services.
