Florida is set to close its controversial “Alligator Alcatraz” migrant detention facility by early June, as reported by The New York Times and WFOR.
Vendors have indicated that detainees will be moved out by June, with the facility expected to be dismantled soon after. This decision comes after a year marked by legal challenges, rising operational costs, and complaints about the facility’s harsh conditions.
Although some Republicans praised the center as a tool for tougher immigration policies under President Trump, its future turned uncertain after growing criticism. Costs to keep the facility running have skyrocketed, costing the state millions.
Governor Ron DeSantis acknowledged ongoing talks about the facility’s closure and stated that it was always intended to be temporary. “If we shut the lights out tomorrow, we will be able to say it served its purpose,” he remarked recently.
As for the nearly 1,400 detainees, it’s unclear where they will be relocated. DeSantis mentioned that if the facility closes, they may be moved to other Department of Homeland Security (DHS) facilities.
The site, less than 50 miles from Trump’s Miami resort, opened last summer on a runway at Dade-Collier Training and Transition Airport. Its rapid establishment drew sharp backlash from various groups, including Democrats, immigrant rights organizations, and environmentalists.
Witnesses have described poor conditions at the facility, including cramped spaces, inadequate meals, and an oppressive atmosphere. Despite this, DHS has claimed that the facility meets higher standards than many U.S. prisons.
Recent legal battles have been a part of the facility’s history. An appellate court recently overturned a lower court’s ruling that mandated its closure. Additionally, a recent lawsuit mandated improved access to legal representation for detainees, ensuring they also have unmonitored phone calls with attorneys.
