Cloverdale Bar’s Business License Suspended Following Health Inspection Fiasco: What This Means for Customers and the Community

Montgomery, Ala. – A well-known Cloverdale bar, 1048 Jazz & Blues, has lost its business license after a troubling health inspection. The venue received a score of 58, which is notably below the 85 needed to pass.

Health inspectors reported a range of serious violations, including the presence of flies and mosquitoes, mold, employees failing to wash their hands, and even a leaking urinal that was discharging sewage.

Normally, if a business fails an inspection, it can reopen after fixing the issues and passing a reinspection. However, Montgomery City Councilmember Andrew Szymanski, representing District 7, indicated that 1048 faces additional challenges. “Once the health department’s score leads to a shutdown, their business license is removed,” Szymanski explained. The property owner must navigate the complete business licensing process, which includes appearing before the city council.

This means that even if the bar fixes the problems and passes a reinspection, it won’t be able to reopen immediately. The owner must apply for a new license and face another review.

The bar’s owner, Douglas Gurney, has yet to respond to inquiries about the situation. In earlier comments, he mentioned that many complaints seem linked to activities in the parking lot, an area he says is out of his control.

This incident highlights broader concerns about public health and safety in dining establishments. According to a recent survey by the National Restaurant Association, 91% of diners consider cleanliness the top priority when choosing where to eat. This suggests that businesses need to ensure they meet health standards to maintain their clientele.

City officials plan to keep the public informed if the bar seeks to renew its license. As communities increasingly prioritize health and hygiene, establishments that overlook these aspects risk suffering severe consequences.
