Hyderabad: London-based smartphone maker Nothing is making big moves by turning its CMF (Colour, Material, Finish) sub-brand into an independent company. India will serve as its global headquarters for operations, research, and manufacturing. While Nothing focuses on mid-range and high-end tech products, CMF aims at budget-savvy consumers.

Carl Pei, CEO and co-founder of Nothing, met with India’s Minister of Electronics and Information Technology, Ashwini Vaishnaw. Pei expressed excitement about establishing CMF in India, stating, “We are building it into the country’s first truly global consumer tech brand.” His vision? “Built from India, to the world.”

To boost this ambition, Nothing has launched a $100 million partnership with Indian electronics firm Optiemus Infracom Limited. This collaboration sets India up as the central hub for CMF smartphone production and exports, with plans to create over 1,800 jobs over the next three years.

Pei emphasized the significance of this venture, stating, “There’s no doubt India will shape the future of the global smartphone industry.” With this investment, Nothing has committed over $200 million to India so far, underscoring the country’s vital role in its growth strategy.

Ashok Gupta, Executive Chairman of Optiemus, echoed these sentiments, highlighting how this partnership reflects the rising strength of India’s tech ecosystem. “Global brands choosing India for manufacturing showcases the vision of Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat,” he said.

Since launching its first product, Nothing Ear (1), in July 2021 and its first smartphone in March 2022, the brand has constantly evolved. The recent introduction of CMF products like Buds Pro and CMF Phone 1 illustrates its commitment to affordability without compromising quality.

CMF Phone 2 Pro, launched in April 2025, received praise for its enhancements over the first model, particularly its slimmer design and improved water resistance. User reviews on social media reflect a growing excitement for CMF’s offerings, with many appreciating the balance of price and features.

This shift in strategy is timely. As of 2023, nearly 25% of smartphone production has moved to India, as brands look to diversify their manufacturing bases. This transition not only boosts local economies but also leverages India’s skilled workforce.
