CMU Athletics Fundraising Campaign Exceeds Million Goal

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Central Michigan Athletics has surpassed its $25 million fundraising goal for the Maroon & Gold BOLD campaign, with total donations reaching $25.9 million, announced Amy Folan, Zyzelewski Family Vice President/Director of Athletics.

The Maroon & Gold BOLD initiative aims to enhance the experience of over 400 student-athletes annually and supports 17 varsity sports at Central Michigan University. The campaign reflects the significance of athletic programs to CMU’s alumni, fans, and local community.

“Our generous donors have committed $25.9 million, driving lasting change for CMU Athletics,” Folan stated. “This is the most ambitious fundraising campaign in Central Michigan Athletics history. Surpassing our goal showcases the value placed on our athletic programs.”

The five-year initiative is a part of a larger upcoming university campaign, as noted by Jennifer Cotter, CMU’s vice president for Advancement.

“We are deeply grateful for the tremendous support behind this initiative and look forward to partnering with our alumni, fans, and supporters,” said Cotter.

Folan highlighted that donors have been able to contribute to various areas of interest:

  • The McGuirk Family established the McGuirk Family Scoreboard at Kelly/Shorts Stadium through a financial commitment in 2022 as part of the Chippewa Champion Center project.
  • A $5 million gift from Thomas ‘Rocky’ and Tracy Ricelli will support the construction of a year-round golf facility for the men’s and women’s programs. Nearly $7.5 million has been raised for this project.
  • Tim and Sherry Magnusson committed $2 million to enhance student-athlete health and well-being programs, inspired by their experience as CMU Chippewa fans since 1994.
  • Alumnus Dennis Lautzenheiser and his wife, Vicki, have donated nearly $750,000 over the last four decades, contributing to the Chippewa Champions Center and establishing a scholarship for undergraduate student-athletes.
  • A $350,000 grant from the Parsons Foundation will allow CMU Athletics to launch the EmpowHER Leadership program, designed to benefit women’s student-athletes.
  • A legacy gift from Tony and Kim Voisin established the Student Spirit and Traditions Endowment Fund to enhance student engagement in athletics.
  • Marita Hattem-Schiffman and her husband Randy Schiffman pledged over $1 million for scholarships and departmental priorities.

Despite exceeding its initial goal, Folan emphasized ongoing commitments to improve varsity sports.

“While our goal was exceeded, there is more to be done. We remain committed to ensuring that Central’s varsity sports programs remain highly competitive,” Folan said.

Additional milestones from the campaign include five gifts exceeding $1 million, 19 gifts between $100,000 and $999,999, and 61 gifts between $25,000 and $99,999. The Chippewa Athletic Fund is nearing its second-largest fundraising year in CMU athletics history, with contributions received through June 30 counting toward the Maroon & Gold BOLD campaign.
