Coastal Security Challenges: Rajnath Singh Highlights Impact of Refugee Influx and Illegal Migration

Rajnath Singh, India’s Defence Minister, recently addressed the Indian Coast Guard Commanders’ Conference in New Delhi, focusing on the maritime challenges the country faces, especially in the Bay of Bengal area. He pointed out that instability in neighboring countries leads to issues like an influx of refugees and illegal migrants, which complicates India’s maritime security.

Singh emphasized that these challenges require more than just routine surveillance. “We must think beyond our ships,” he said, underscoring the need for broader geopolitical awareness and preparedness. With changing regional dynamics, the importance of proactive coastguard operations becomes even clearer.

The Defence Minister also spoke about the move towards self-reliance in defense. He praised the Indian Coast Guard for its efforts under initiatives like Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat, highlighting that most of the budget is now invested in developing indigenous assets. This approach not only strengthens national security but also boosts the economy.

According to statistics from the Ministry of Defence, around 90% of the Coast Guard’s budget is allocated for homegrown projects. This trend is a significant shift from previous years when India heavily relied on foreign procurement for military assets.

As we consider the historical context, military self-reliance has evolved significantly over the decades. In the 1960s, India faced a formidable challenge in securing its borders, primarily relying on imports. Today, the focus is on indigenization, which has become essential for national pride and security.

Environmental concerns also play a role, as our oceans face various threats, necessitating collaborative efforts.
