China Oil and Foodstuffs Corporation (COFCO) is making big moves in Brazil. They plan to build the largest soybean crushing complex in the country. This initiative, reported by CPG, reflects their growing influence in the agricultural sector.
COFCO International will pump over 2 billion reais (about US$400 million) into expanding their processing facility in Rondonópolis, located in Mato Grosso state. Local officials expect the project to wrap up by early 2028.
As China’s leading food producer and trader, COFCO plays a vital role in the country’s grain supply chain. They are key players in the global market for soybeans, corn, and other staples.
The upcoming expansion will double the facility’s crushing capacity from 4,500 tonnes a day to around 10,000 tonnes. This change will not only bolster their operation but also position Rondonópolis as the largest soybean processing site in Brazil.
The plant serves both international and domestic markets by producing soybean meal, oil, and biodiesel—products essential for global feed and energy chains.
Rondonópolis, often called the “Capital of Agribusiness,” is crucial for regional production, storage, and logistics. This expansion will enhance COFCO’s presence in this key agribusiness hub.
Recent industry trends show that global demand for soybeans continues to rise. According to the United States Department of Agriculture, soybean consumption is projected to hit record levels as countries seek reliable sources for animal feed and oil production. This makes COFCO’s investment strategically important, not just for Brazil, but for the broader agriculture market.
Additionally, social media conversations around this investment highlight mixed feelings. While some applaud the increased job opportunities and development, others express concerns over environmental impacts and local agriculture disruption.
COFCO’s move in Brazil underscores a broader trend of international investments shifting towards agribusiness, especially as nations look to secure their food supply chains in a rapidly changing global landscape.
