Colby Covington has taken legal action against Jorge Masvidal, seeking over $100,000 in damages after an alleged attack outside a restaurant in Miami Beach in 2022. The lawsuit was officially filed in Miami-Dade County on March 23.
The incident occurred shortly after Covington defeated Masvidal in a UFC match. In a post-fight interview, Masvidal made a threatening comment, saying he would hurt Covington if they crossed paths again. Sure enough, on March 21, as Covington left Papi Steak, Masvidal reportedly “ambushed” him, striking him in the face without warning.
Masvidal faced criminal charges due to this altercation. He eventually reached a plea deal, pleading guilty to misdemeanor battery. The court sentenced him to time served, meaning he wouldn’t spend additional time in jail. Following the court proceedings, in a social media post, Masvidal fired back at Covington, claiming he was ready for more confrontation and shooting a warning about possible future disputes.
Covington’s lawsuit describes the attack as “unprovoked” and claims it was intentional to inflict harm. As a result of the incident, Covington says he has experienced various injuries and ongoing pain, leading to significant medical expenses. His attorneys argue that these injuries are either permanent or likely to impact him in the future.
Since the lawsuit, no court date has been scheduled. In the meantime, Covington has fought twice in the UFC, losing to Leon Edwards and Joaquin Buckley. He has also participated in other fighting events, achieving victories over notable fighters like Luke Rockhold and Dillon Danis.
Masvidal, on the other hand, announced his retirement from the UFC shortly after their fight but later returned for a boxing match against Nate Diaz. While he has expressed interest in competing in the UFC again, he has not been booked yet.
