Cold Wave Alert: Ongoing Chill Affects 24 Districts – Stay Prepared!

A chilly cold wave is affecting 24 districts in Bangladesh. As temperatures drop, daily life is disrupted, especially in the north. The Bangladesh Meteorological Department has warned that this cold spell may last another four to five days.

On Thursday, Sreemangal recorded the lowest temperature at 7 degrees Celsius, while Bandarban saw a comparatively warmer 28.1 degrees. Heavy fog covered many areas, interfering with visibility and transportation.

In the Barishal division, dense fog has severely hampered everyday activities. Reports indicate that hospital admissions for cold-related burn injuries have surged. Rangpur Medical College and Hospital is seeing increasing cases, particularly among those trying to stay warm by fires.

Medical staff, like Md Shahen Shah, head of the burn unit, noted that all their beds are occupied, and they are even treating patients in other wards. Young children, such as seven-year-old Lamia Akhter, have suffered serious burns while trying to warm themselves near fires.

AKM Nazmul Hoque, a meteorologist, suggests that this cold wave is likely to last a few more days, but he reassures that a recent depression in the Bay of Bengal isn’t expected to worsen the weather in Bangladesh.

With the cold wave impacting those in vulnerable situations, experts urge everyone to stay vigilant. According to recent statistics, cold weather can lead to an increase in respiratory issues, especially among children and the elderly. The World Health Organization (WHO) states that cold temperatures can exacerbate health conditions like asthma and pneumonia.

Social media reactions highlight the struggles of daily wage workers, particularly fishermen and laborers, who find themselves in dire situations due to extreme cold and fog. Harun Majhi, a fisherman, expressed concern for his family as visibility dropped to nearly zero, making sea fishing dangerous.

As collective efforts increase to support those affected, it’s clear that this unusual cold wave highlights the importance of community solidarity during challenging times.
