Colts Aiming to Ignite Real Competition at Quarterback Position: Insights from GM

INDIANAPOLIS — The Indianapolis Colts are gearing up for an exciting quarterback competition this offseason. General Manager Chris Ballard announced that Anthony Richardson will face off against a new quarterback, who they plan to bring in soon.

Ballard emphasized the importance of finding the right veteran to challenge Richardson. He believes that competition will benefit both the team and the young quarterback. “We want to create real competition,” he explained. “We drafted Anthony understanding it would take time and that he might face challenges along the way.” While everyone, including fans, wishes for immediate success, Ballard sees the value in helping Richardson grow.

Richardson jumped into the starting role after just one preseason game in 2023, defeating veteran Gardner Minshew. Unfortunately, he suffered an injury that sidelined him for the rest of the season by Week 5. Last season, he regained the starting position after a brief benching but struggled, completing only 47.7% of his passes and throwing 12 interceptions. However, he displayed his rushing abilities, averaging 5.8 yards per carry and scoring six rushing touchdowns.

Despite these ups and downs, the Colts remain hopeful for Richardson’s future. Ballard has had positive conversations with him, noting that Richardson acknowledges the work he needs to put in. “He understands there needs to be some growth,” Ballard said. “I’m proud of how he accepts feedback and knows he has to improve.” He believes Richardson is beginning to grasp the weight of the quarterback position.

As the Colts look to add a quarterback, they are open to all options—whether it’s through free agency, trades, or the draft. “Everything will be on the table,” Ballard stated. However, the current offseason quarterback market isn’t particularly robust. Sam Darnold is expected to be the top free agent quarterback, with others like Justin Fields, Jameis Winston, and Mac Jones also available.

Given the investment the Colts have made in Richardson, he still holds a strong position as the returning starter. Coach Shane Steichen has one clear goal for Richardson: “We’re just looking for consistency.” With the right moves this offseason, the Colts hope to see Richardson take significant steps forward in his development.
