The Indianapolis Colts have just signed 44-year-old Philip Rivers to their practice squad. This news has fans buzzing with excitement and nostalgia.
Rivers has had a stellar career. He played 17 seasons in the NFL, mainly with the San Diego/Los Angeles Chargers before wrapping up with the Colts in 2020. He’s known for his incredible stats: over 63,000 passing yards and 421 touchdowns. His achievements include being an eight-time Pro Bowler and throwing for more than 4,000 yards in 12 of his 15 seasons as a starter.
He brings a wealth of experience that could benefit the team. Rivers worked closely with current Colts coach Shane Steichen during his time with the Chargers. Their established relationship may ease Rivers into this new role, making him a valuable asset on the practice squad.
Interestingly, Rivers has also been mentoring Colts quarterback Riley Leonard, who was drafted this year. They share a hometown connection, as both are from Fairhope, Alabama. Rivers, who also coaches at St. Michael Catholic High School, led his team to the third round of the Alabama state playoffs recently.
In his first year of eligibility, Rivers is a semifinalist for the Pro Football Hall of Fame Class of 2026. If he stays on the practice squad, he maintains his eligibility, but playing in a game resets this clock. This adds another layer of intrigue for fans as they watch his potential path to the Hall of Fame.
The Colts are currently facing challenges with injuries. Starter Daniel Jones suffered a torn Achilles, and backup Anthony Richardson is out due to a fractured orbital bone. Coach Steichen confirmed Richardson won’t return this week, and Leonard is also dealing with a knee injury. Rivers will join practices as the team gears up for their next game against the Seattle Seahawks.
