Colts RB Ahmed Suffers Serious Injury from Hip-Drop Tackle: What It Means for the Team

In Indianapolis, there was a worrying incident during Colts training camp involving veteran running back Salvon Ahmed. During a tackle drill, he suffered a serious injury to his right leg after a defender used an illegal hip-drop technique. This tackle was particularly concerning since the NFL had banned this method last season due to the high risk of injuries.

The injury occurred while the team was in a “live” drill, meaning tackles were allowed. Ahmed had just taken a handoff and was breaking through the defense when Trey Washington, an undrafted free agent, caught up with him. Unfortunately, Ahmed ended up in an awkward position, grabbing his ankle in visible distress. His teammates quickly gathered around him, with safety Camryn Bynum leading a prayer for his recovery.

After the incident, Ahmed was placed on a stretcher and taken to a hospital for X-rays. Coach Shane Steichen expressed his concern, noting, “We never want to see that happen.” He emphasized that the team is against hip-drop tackles but also stressed the need for some intensity in practice as they prepare for the upcoming season.

This incident isn’t isolated in the league. A report from the NFL Injury Data Project indicated that the hip-drop tackle was responsible for a significant number of lower body injuries last season. In fact, these injuries have increased by 14% in recent years, prompting the league to take stricter actions against such techniques.

In the spirit of camaraderie, Ahmed’s teammates wanted to continue practice after the injury. Veteran linebacker Zaire Franklin highlighted the need for everyone to push through tough situations to improve as a team. He said, “There are guys out here that need those reps to compete and get better.”

Ahmed is not new to the NFL, having played four seasons with the Miami Dolphins before joining the Colts this year. His experience and leadership will be missed as he recovers. The team is hopeful for his swift return, and the league continues to adapt its protocols to ensure player safety.
