Residents in 19 Oregon counties who rely on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) now have more time to replace food lost during recent storms. Those affected by the December 17 storms or power outages can request additional benefits to make up for spoiled food.
Households in the following counties have 30 days, until January 16, to submit their claims for replacement benefits:
- Benton
- Clackamas
- Clatsop
- Columbia
- Coos
- Douglas
- Hood River
- Jefferson
- Klamath
- Lane
- Lincoln
- Linn
- Marion
- Multnomah
- Polk
- Tillamook
- Wallowa
- Washington
- Yamhill
If you live in a different county, you’ll have 10 days to request assistance.
The replacement benefits will match the value of the lost food but won’t exceed your usual monthly benefit. Once approved, the funds will go directly onto your Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) card.
According to the Oregon Department of Human Services, this extension aims to help those struggling as a result of the storms. The recent storms tested many communities, highlighting how crucial it is to have support during emergencies. In fact, surveys indicate that nearly 60% of Oregonians rely on SNAP at some point in their lives, making this assistance even more significant.
