Columbia Softball’s Remarkable Comeback
After a rocky start to the season, the Columbia softball team is on a roll. They swept both Presbyterian and Tennessee State, marking three wins in a row during the MUSB Invitational II in Macon, Georgia. Now sitting at 3-10, Columbia is showing signs of improvement.
The team demonstrated fighting spirit in their games. In the opener against Presbyterian, they rallied from a three-run deficit to win 6-3. They followed that with a 5-2 victory over Tennessee State, showing their ability to bounce back from early setbacks.
Coach Jennifer Teague expressed her pride in the team’s unity amid challenges. “Winning the last three games feels really good,” she said. “We rely on the habits and culture we’ve built to help us through tough times.”
Highlights from the Games
In the first match against Presbyterian, Columbia scored four crucial runs in the sixth inning. After trailing, Eleni Katsivalis and Tatum Hubble set the stage for a two-run double by Kyra Mason. Later, Alicia Marzouca hit a grand slam, securing the win and ending the game with four RBIs.
In the second game against Tennessee State, the Lions immediately responded to an early deficit. After falling behind 2-0, Katsivalis’ quick thinking led to a run, followed by Marzouca’s second homer of the day to give Columbia a 3-2 lead. Payton Shimansky reached base and was driven home by Savanna Messner’s two-run bomb, marking Messner’s first home run of the season.
Caylene Nguyen pitched well in the second game, allowing just two runs in four innings. Emmy Davis then closed the game without giving up a hit.
A Look at Performance Trends
This turnaround comes amid a broader trend in college softball where teams are increasingly seeing high-scoring games. According to a survey by the NCAA, there has been a 20% increase in home runs across various tournaments this season compared to last year. This shift reflects how teams are focusing on power hitting, which Columbia is tapping into.
Social Media Buzz
Fans and players took to social media to celebrate Columbia’s rising success. On platforms like X and Instagram, players shared highlights and moments from the games, generating positive reactions from supporters. The hashtag #RoarLions is trending, underlining the enthusiasm around the team’s revival.
Looking Ahead
Columbia now takes a break before facing South Dakota State at the Maverick Invitational in Texas on March 13. As the team gears up for this next challenge, they carry forward a renewed confidence that could define the rest of their season.
