A recent cyber attack on Columbia University compromised the personal data of around 870,000 students, applicants, and staff. This breach included sensitive details like Social Security numbers and health information. School officials confirmed the attack in late June when students couldn’t access their emails and other online services.
Columbia’s investigation revealed that hackers infiltrated systems related to admissions, enrollment, and financial aid, exposing demographic and academic records. The university is offering two years of credit monitoring to those affected and has committed to improving its security measures.
Interestingly, the motive behind the attack relates to race-based admissions policies. A hacker, who spoke to Bloomberg, claimed the attack aimed to highlight these practices after the Supreme Court’s decision to end affirmative action in 2023. Some of the stolen data was shared with The New York Times, raising questions about demographic classifications in admissions.
Despite the breach, officials reported that patient records from the Columbia University Irving Medical Center were not compromised. The attack first gained attention from Bloomberg News, which reported on the scope and impact last week.
In an unexpected twist, Columbia later agreed to provide detailed admissions data by race, grades, and test scores to the Trump administration. This decision is part of a settlement focused on addressing issues like antisemitism in educational institutions, impacting all U.S. colleges receiving federal funds.
