The Columbus Crew has made a significant change by letting go of head coach Henrik Rydström after just 14 games this season. Rydström, who took over in the winter, leaves the team with only three wins and a total of 13 points. The Crew’s next match is set for Wednesday in the quarterfinals of the U.S. Open Cup.
General Manager Issa Tall explained the decision, noting several reasons for the change. “First, the results were disappointing,” he said. “We’ve only won three games. Second, while we’ve improved our playing style, it’s still not where we want it to be. Finally, there was a lack of connection within the team.” Tall emphasized that they needed this change to get back on track.
Laurent Courtois, an assistant coach, has stepped up as the interim head coach. Additionally, other staff members, including another assistant, Theodor Olsson, and analyst Mak Pakhei, have also left the club. The Crew will face a six-week league break for the World Cup after their next match.
Tall is optimistic about the rest of the season. “We have 20 games left, and we can turn this around,” he stated. However, the team’s current performance stands in stark contrast to the previous season. With former coach Wilfried Nancy, the Crew had a dynamic and exciting style, scoring 19 goals in those same 14 games. This year, they rank 23rd in expected goals and 20th in chances created.
Insider sources have mentioned that Rydström had trouble gaining the players’ trust and commitment. “You can research and go through data, but sometimes it just doesn’t work out,” Tall shared, reflecting on the hiring process. Rydström previously managed Malmö in Sweden, where he won two league titles before joining Columbus.
Courtois is familiar with the team, having returned after a successful stint as head coach of the Crew’s second team. “He knows our culture and has a clear vision of how we want to play,” Tall affirmed.
Interestingly, Columbus is just one of four teams to make coaching changes this season, with others including Orlando City and Inter Miami. The Crew’s roster has limitations, as all designated player slots are currently filled. Players like Diego Rossi and Daniel Gazdag have faced challenges, and the team hopes to navigate these obstacles while bringing in new talent.
According to the latest MLS statistics, teams that have replaced their coaches generally see a boost in performance. This suggests that the Crew’s leadership believes a fresh perspective could reinvigorate the squad.
