COLUMBUS – The Columbus Crew has just appointed Henrik Rydström as their new head coach, making him the ninth in the team’s history. Rydström, who previously led Malmö FF in Sweden’s top league, brings a decade of coaching experience to the Crew.
In 2023, Rydström guided Malmö FF to win the Allsvenskan championship with an impressive record of 20 wins, 6 draws, and 4 losses. The following season, he helped the team secure back-to-back league titles and a Swedish Cup victory, marking a significant achievement for the club.
Joining Rydström are assistant coach Theodor Olsson and analyst Mak Pakhei. Current coaching staff members Phil Boerger and Marc O’Neill will also continue their roles.
“Henrik has shown strong leadership throughout his career as both a player and a coach,” said General Manager Issa Tall. “We believe he fits our vision for the team perfectly.” This vision emphasizes evolving the Crew’s distinctive style of play and consistently striving for championships.
The ownership group, including the Haslam and Johnson families, expressed their excitement about Rydström’s leadership skills. They believe he will effectively represent the club and foster a strong connection with fans and the local community.
“I’m excited to join the Crew,” Rydström said. “This club has something special, and I’m eager to build on its success. Our focus will remain on improving and bringing joy to the team and our supporters.”
Rydström’s coaching journey began in 2016. He stepped in as acting head coach of Kalmar FF after the head coach went on leave. By the end of 2019, he was appointed head coach of IK Sirius, where he impressed by keeping the team in Sweden’s top league.
During his time leading Kalmar, Rydström achieved a sixth-place finish in his first season and helped the team qualify for the UEFA Europa Conference League in his second. As a player, Rydström was a significant figure at Kalmar, where he led the team to its only league championship in 2008.
With the Columbus Crew looking forward to the 2026 season, they are intensifying preparations. The Crew’s fans can look forward to a competitive season, starting with two away games before their home opener against Chicago Fire FC on March 7, 2026.
As a fun fact, the Crew were the first club in Major League Soccer history. They continue to have a rich legacy, intertwining the past with the future as they strive for success on the field.
