Obesity is becoming a serious health issue in India. With more people leading sedentary lifestyles, eating poorly, and feeling stressed, the problem is growing fast. A 2023 study published in The Lancet Global Health reveals that nearly 40% of adults in India are now classified as overweight or obese. During the launch of the 38th National Games in Dehradun, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed this growing concern. He highlighted the need for everyone, especially the youth, to focus on physical fitness. He suggested reducing cooking oil use at home by 10% to promote healthier eating habits.

The Economic Survey for 2024-25, presented by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, echoed these worries. It noted that unhealthy diets contribute significantly to India’s disease burden, with 54% of health issues stemming from poor eating habits. The survey also revealed that obesity rates are much higher in urban areas (29.8% among men) compared to rural areas (19.3% among men).

Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar, who is known for his strict fitness routine, shared key steps on social media to help combat obesity:

  2. Spend time outside for fresh air and sunlight.
  3. Avoid processed foods and use less oil — opt for traditional ghee.

Experts agree with these suggestions and emphasize the importance of avoiding processed foods and selecting healthier oils. Nutritionist Nisha Madal advises opting for oils like extra virgin olive oil, avocado oil, and cold-pressed coconut oil. Additionally, daily exposure to sunlight can boost vitamin D production, which is vital for overall health.

Combining these habits with regular exercise can make a significant difference. Engaging in activities like walking, running, dancing, and yoga can boost your metabolism and strengthen your heart.
