Combatting Lifestyle Diseases: Insights from Minister Kishan on Society’s Growing Health Crisis

Hyderabad’s Union minister, G. Kishan Reddy, recently addressed the significant health challenges faced by many due to shifting lifestyles. He emphasized that these challenges particularly affect the poor and middle class.

Speaking at the opening of the Prime Minister’s Jan Aushadhi warehouse in Telangana, Reddy noted a staggering statistic: 95 out of every 100 people may need medical attention, often without even realizing it. Many retirees are spending their pensions on healthcare, while lower-income families drain their savings to cover medical costs. This situation reflects a critical need for affordable healthcare solutions.

Reddy praised the introduction of wellness centers in urban areas, which are vital for offering preventive care and early intervention to vulnerable communities. He also spoke about the Jan Aushadhi scheme, which provides medications at significantly reduced prices—between 50% and 90% lower than regular pharmacies. This initiative aims to make essential drugs accessible for everyone.

Importantly, these Jan Aushadhi centers don’t just help people afford medicines; they also create job opportunities for youth by expanding access to low-cost healthcare. The recent opening of new depots is a step forward in ensuring these resources reach those in need.

Additionally, Reddy highlighted the Ayushman Bharat program, which offers medical insurance up to Rs 5 lakh per year for every individual, including free treatment for seniors over 70. He urged the Telangana government to actively implement these health programs, pointing out that previous administrations had overlooked them.

As lifestyle-related health issues continue to rise, experts remind us of the importance of preventive care. For instance, a recent survey revealed that chronic diseases are becoming more common, and having access to affordable healthcare will be crucial moving forward.
