LYNN — Zosia VanMeter has launched Project Hestia, a fresh initiative aimed at tackling food insecurity in Lynn. Her goal is simple: create a network of outdoor food pantries that anyone can access, anytime.
Zosia, who also leads the Athena Project, knows her community well. Born in the Philippines, she moved to the U.S. as a baby and has made Lynn her home. With Project Hestia, she envisions that every ward without a pantry will have its own food resource.
The name “Hestia” pays tribute to the Greek goddess of home and stability, which reflects what these pantries are designed to achieve. Instead of concentrating resources in one area, Project Hestia will place pantries in community hotspots, like churches.
The first pantry acts as a “pilot program.” Zosia plans to set up two more locations soon. “Food insecurity is a nationwide issue,” she explains. “We want to rethink accessibility. Rather than bring food to people, we place resources where they are needed most.”
A kickoff event is scheduled at Grace Methodist Church during the North Shore Juneteenth Black Excellence 5K on May 16. Zosia will be there, offering water and accepting donations of canned goods and baby formula from community members.
“The goal is to have resources readily available,” Zosia emphasized. “We want to be proactive, not reactive.”
