The Washington Commanders are gearing up for an exciting event this Sunday. President Donald Trump plans to attend the game against the Detroit Lions at Northwest Stadium. While discussions about renaming the new stadium after him have been rumored, no formal request has been made.
Reports suggest that Trump has been in informal talks with the team’s ownership, led by Josh Harris, about the stadium’s potential name change. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt hinted that Trump believes his role was crucial in facilitating the stadium’s development.
In September, the D.C. Council sealed a $3.8 billion plan for a new closed stadium on the site of the former Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium. This project will also include mixed-use development, promising affordable housing units and more. The stadium is set to open in 2030.
For years, the Commanders sought to relocate from Maryland to D.C., but hurdles were plenty. The land was federal property, but a recent law signed by President Biden granted D.C. control for 99 years, allowing for stadium development.
The city is investing over $1 billion into infrastructure, while the Commanders handle the stadium’s design and construction. It will be city-owned but leased to the team at just $1 a year. Over 30 years, D.C. is expected to earn $674 million from parking and sales taxes.
A key aspect of this deal is naming rights. The Commanders will keep exclusive rights to sell naming rights for the stadium, a valuable funding source. For context, other teams have struck significant deals: SoFi paid $625 million for naming rights to the Chargers’ and Rams’ stadium, while Allegiant Air pays up to $25 million annually for the Raiders’ stadium name.
Trump’s visit marks a significant moment. He will be the first sitting president to attend a game at this new venue and the first in 47 years to be at any regular-season NFL game. Mark Clouse, president of the Commanders, highlighted this occasion as a chance to honor veterans and active service members.
This isn’t Trump’s first collaboration with the team. Earlier, he helped announce that D.C. will host the 2027 NFL Draft, calling it “something that nobody else will ever be able to duplicate.”
However, not all of Trump’s remarks have been positive. He once threatened to interfere with the stadium deal unless the team reverted to its previous name, which many found offensive. The team has since embraced the name “Commanders” since 2022.
As the Commanders continue to navigate the complexities of their new stadium, Trump’s involvement adds another layer of intrigue. The community is watching closely as plans unfold for what hopes to be a landmark venue in D.C.
