Commonwealth University Celebrates Excellence: Meet the Inspirational Recipients of the Keepers of the Flame Awards

The Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education (PASSHE) recently recognized three exceptional individuals with the third annual Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Keepers of the Flame Award. This honor highlights their efforts in fostering welcoming and inclusive environments across Commonwealth University campuses.

The awardees include:

• Timothy Rooney, a Mansfield graduate from 1988
• Dr. Lisette Schillig, an English professor at CU-Lock Haven
• Marcella Woods, coordinator of cultural affairs at CU-Bloomsburg

This award celebrates individuals from each of PASSHE’s 14 university campuses who contribute to diversity, equity, and inclusion. The winners were announced at the annual DEI Summit at Millersville University.

Timothy Rooney graduated with a double major in communications and geography and was active in several campus organizations, such as the All-Residence Hall Council and the Spanish Club. Now serving as City Manager in Mustang, Oklahoma, Rooney plays an active role in the Mansfield Alumni Association and is a strong advocate for the LGBTQIA+ community. He often returns to Pennsylvania to participate in alumni events, emphasizing the importance of community and connection.

Dr. Lisette Schillig is a fierce advocate for gender equity in education. She has been instrumental in shaping the curriculum for the Women and Gender Studies minor at CU-Lock Haven, ensuring it reflects diverse viewpoints. Formerly the director of the HOPE Center, she worked to create a supportive atmosphere for students facing various challenges, from personal safety to academic struggles. She actively promotes awareness around social issues and is involved in initiatives to support LGBTQ students.

Marcella Woods was pivotal in founding the Multicultural Center at Bloomsburg, where she now serves as its first director. She collaborates with various campus departments to help attract and retain underrepresented students. Woods addresses challenges like food and housing insecurity that impact students’ education and has formed partnerships with community organizations to create work-study opportunities. She also leads workshops on financial literacy and cultural diversity, helping students engage with their communities through faith-based activities and service projects.

Dr. Denise Pearson, PASSHE’s chief DEI officer, notes, “The Keepers of the Flame Award celebrates those who make our campuses inclusive and welcoming. Our recipients exemplify a commitment to student success and the principles of diversity and equity, which enhance our university communities.”
