The Portage County Health Care Center is at the center of local debate again. Recently, an Ad Hoc Committee meeting ended without a decision about selling the facility. This marks the third effort since 2017 to put the center on the market.
Outside the Portage County Annex Center, a group of protesters made their feelings known. They worry about the potential sale and its impact on the community. Nancy Roppe, one vocal protester, highlighted the center’s impressive record during the pandemic. “We achieved a five-star rating and didn’t have a single COVID case here,” she said.
The center’s asking price is $4 million, which includes furniture and equipment. Although a recent referendum passed to approve property taxes of up to $500,000 for maintenance, many feel this is insufficient. Supporters argue the county can afford to keep the facility running. “Audits have shown no deficits or hardships,” said advocate Karlene Ferrante.
Becky Woodward, a former resident, shared her positive experience. She noted the dedicated staff, with many nurses boasting over 25 years of experience. “That continuity meant everything,” she said, emphasizing how it improves resident care.
Despite the lack of action from the committee, protesters remain determined. They aim to preserve the center as a vital community resource. “We still have strong public support and want more voices heard at these meetings,” Roppe added. Ferrante reinforced their commitment, stating, “We will not give up.”
Many in the community are frustrated with the committee’s tendency to hold meetings in closed sessions. This lack of transparency raises concerns about decision-making processes related to the health care center’s future.
According to a recent survey by the National Association of Counties, more than 60% of respondents believe that local health care facilities are crucial for community well-being. This aligns with the sentiments expressed by the Portage County advocates who argue for keeping the center open.
The committee is set to meet again next week, as residents continue to rally for their community’s needs. The ongoing discussions surrounding the Portage County Health Care Center showcase a community grappling with important healthcare choices in uncertain times.
