Community in Mourning: Southern University Students and Faculty Remember 20-Year-Old Caleb Wilson

BATON ROUGE, La. — Caleb Wilson, a 20-year-old student at Southern University, tragically lost his life early Thursday morning. He collapsed during what is reported to be an off-campus, unapproved fraternity event at a local park.

Authorities are currently conducting an autopsy. Baton Rouge Police spokesperson L’Jean McKneely stated that details are limited and the situation remains under investigation.

Caleb was a pledge for the Omega Psi Phi fraternity and a talented member of the school’s beloved Human Jukebox band. His musical journey included performances in Cuba and Europe, and he once played alongside well-known musician Trombone Shorty.

After his collapse at North Sherwood Community Park, fellow students rushed him to Baton Rouge General Hospital. Sadly, he arrived unconscious and was pronounced dead shortly after.

Southern University expressed their condolences, acknowledging Caleb as a junior majoring in mechanical engineering. The university community is mourning the loss, grappling with the shock of his passing.

Many students shared their disbelief and sorrow. Freshman Ma’Tajah Peterson highlighted how well-known Caleb was on campus, especially within the Human Jukebox. Senior Jonan Wade noted the unusual nature of the situation, emphasizing that it wasn’t related to violence but rather an incident linked to fraternity activities. Christopher White remarked on the somber atmosphere, wishing for healing as the community comes to terms with this tragedy.
