BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Ella Cook, a 19-year-old sophomore at Brown University, was remembered fondly during her funeral on Monday. Attendees described her as “smart, confident, curious, kind, principled, and brave.” She was killed in a tragic shooting at Brown on December 13, alongside fellow student MukhammadAziz Umurzokov, 18. The attack occurred during a study session when a gunman opened fire, injuring nine others.
The suspect, Claudio Neves Valente, 48, was a former graduate student at Brown. Two days later, he fatally shot MIT professor Nuno F.G. Loureiro before taking his own life. Authorities have confirmed that Neves Valente died on December 16, the same day Loureiro passed away in the hospital.
In response to the horrific events, the federal government has launched an investigation into Brown University to check for possible violations of the Clery Act, which mandates safety requirements for schools. The U.S. Department of Education is reviewing various security reports and emergency response records from the university.
During the funeral in Alabama, Cook’s family encouraged attendees to wear bright colors, reflecting her Christian faith and the holiday season. The Rev. Paul F.M. Zahl shared heartfelt letters from the Brown community, including one from political economy professor David Skarbek, who characterized Ella as a dynamic student with a unique nickname: “Ellabama.” He spoke about her impact on campus despite her short time there.
Cook excelled in her studies, pursuing French, math, and economics. She was also the vice president of the college Republicans, a role that prompted reactions from political leaders. Alabama Governor Kay Ivey ordered flags to be flown at half-staff in her memory.
This tragic event has resonated beyond just the university community. Online, social media has become a space for mourning and reflection. Many users have expressed their shock and sadness, highlighting the urgent need for discussions about campus safety and gun control. Polls show that a significant portion of Americans favor stricter gun laws, emphasizing that this issue is more relevant than ever.Hot Springs Sentinel Record
