The Film Independent Spirit Awards were held on Sunday, celebrating the best in independent cinema.

In the screenplay categories, Eva Victor’s Sorry, Baby won Best Screenplay, while Alex Russell won Best First Screenplay for Lurker, which also won Best First Feature. These wins reflect the growing recognition of new voices in filmmaking.
For acting awards, Rose Byrne won Best Lead Performance for If I Had Legs I’d Kick You. Naomi Ackie received Best Supporting Performance for Sorry, Baby, and Kayo Martin was awarded Best Breakthrough Performance for The Plague.
The Best Documentary award went to The Perfect Neighbor, and The Secret Agent was recognized as Best International Film. These films showcase diverse stories and perspectives, enriching our understanding of global narratives.
Esta Isla (This Island) won the John Cassavetes Award, celebrating films made for under $1 million. In editing, Sofía Subercaseaux won for The Testament of Ann Lee, highlighting the importance of editing in bringing a film’s vision to life.
On the television side, Erin Doherty and Owen Cooper earned acting nods for their roles in Adolescence, which was named Best New Scripted Series. Pee-wee as Himself took the award for Best New Non-Scripted or Documentary Series.
This year, the awards moved to the Hollywood Palladium after four decades in a beach tent. The show is also being streamed live, showcasing a broader audience for indie films.
Notably, the Spirit Awards have recognized gender-neutral categories since 2023. This year’s nominees came from 18 countries, highlighting the global reach of independent cinema, with budgets ranging from $35,000 to $20 million.
Earlier, awards were presented during a brunch, with the Producers Award going to Tony Yang, the Truer Than Fiction Award to Rajee Samarasinghe, and Tatti Ribeiro receiving the Someone to Watch Award. The Long Walk was honored with the Robert Altman Award for its ensemble cast.
