It’s been six months since a ceasefire was declared in Gaza, yet the humanitarian crisis there seems to be fading from global attention. Sadly, conditions continue to worsen rapidly. As of early May 2026, reports show that Israeli forces remain heavily active, with military movements noted in areas like Jabalia, which complicates humanitarian efforts.
Since the ceasefire on 10 October 2025, the Palestinian Ministry of Health reports that 824 Palestinians have been killed due to ongoing Israeli military operations. The use of weapons in densely populated areas has turned civilian spaces into dangerous zones. This has disrupted public order and made daily life incredibly challenging.
While humanitarian aid has slightly increased, the needs are far from being met. Between 14 and 20 April, aid surged due to the reopening of the Zikim Crossing. However, ongoing restrictions on crossing points and essential supplies have led to severe shortages of food, medicine, and basic necessities.
A recent assessment highlighted that two years of conflict have reversed Gaza’s development by about 77 years. The estimated cost to recover and rebuild is approximately $71.4 billion over the next decade. The healthcare system has nearly collapsed, with 94% of hospitals either damaged or destroyed. As of the end of April 2026, almost half of essential medicines were at zero stock, making it nearly impossible to provide treatment for critical conditions.
Environmental issues also plague Gaza. A staggering 81% of shelters for displaced individuals are reported to have pest infestations. Limited resources for pest control only exacerbate health risks, affecting the living conditions of those already suffering.
The situation in the West Bank is similarly troubling. Between 7 October 2023 and 30 March 2026, OCHA reported that 1,079 Palestinians were killed, including at least 235 children. Ongoing military operations and settler-related incidents continue to create an atmosphere of fear and insecurity.
The broader context is vital here. The cycle of conflict and despair in the occupied Palestinian territories has lasted over five decades and intensified in recent years. The events of 7 October 2023 marked a turning point, bringing unprecedented civilian casualties and destruction, skyrocketing food prices, and a declining currency.
Experts emphasize that without meaningful intervention and resolution, conditions in the region may worsen further. The need for comprehensive strategies to address not just immediate humanitarian needs but also long-term recovery is critical. Only through sustained attention and action can there be hope for restoring stability and improving living conditions in Gaza and the West Bank.
