Conan O’Brien is set to receive the 26th Mark Twain Prize for American Humor from the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.
This prestigious award honors incredible humorists. O’Brien will be celebrated at a gala performance on March 23 at the Kennedy Center Concert Hall, featuring many well-known comedians.
Deborah F. Rutter, the president of the Kennedy Center, praised O’Brien for his impact over the last 40 years. “From ‘Saturday Night Live’ and ‘The Simpsons’ to late-night shows and podcasts, he has consistently redefined comedy,” she said. Rutter looks forward to a lively evening celebrating O’Brien’s legacy.
In typical fashion, O’Brien responded humorously to the news. He joked, “I am honored to be the first winner of the Mark Twain Prize recognized not for humor, but for my work as a riverboat pilot.”
The Mark Twain Prize recognizes those who have made significant contributions to American culture like the famous writer Samuel Clemens, better known as Mark Twain. Twain was known for his honest and bold commentary on society, tackling issues of justice and human behavior through his wit.
As part of the award, O’Brien will receive a bronze bust of Mark Twain, created by sculptor Karl Gerhardt in 1884.
Many comedy legends have received this honor in the past, including Richard Pryor, Whoopi Goldberg, and Billy Crystal. O’Brien’s achievement places him among these iconic figures.
In addition to this award, O’Brien will also host the 97th Academy Awards on March 2. Keep an eye out for more exciting updates from him and his projects.
