Concerns Rise as E.P.A. Environmental Justice Workers Face Possible Leave: What It Means for Our Planet

Employees at the Environmental Protection Agency’s Office of Environmental Justice were informed during a recent phone meeting that some may soon be placed on administrative leave. This news marks a significant shift under President Trump, who has plans to eliminate the office.

On his first day back in the White House, Trump signed an executive order aimed at dismantling government programs focused on environmental justice. These programs are designed to protect low-income and minority communities from the negative impacts of pollution.

According to sources familiar with the meeting, which included about 100 staff members, acting assistant administrator Theresa Segovia stated that the agency is moving ahead to fulfill the executive order’s requirements. This includes placing employees, specifically those involved in diversity and inclusion initiatives, on administrative leave.

The affected employees were not told who would be placed on leave, but they were informed that notifications would be sent to individuals shortly. Many expect that staff members from regional offices will also face similar actions soon.

One notable change is the removal of an online tool called EJScreen, which the environmental justice office used for screening and mapping. This tool was taken down earlier this week.

Moreover, around 1,100 recently hired employees were warned they could face immediate termination. Many of these individuals likely work within the Environmental Justice office, which was established in 2022 under the Biden administration.

Regarding the administrative leave plan, an agency spokesperson stated they would provide updates when ready.

Trump’s advisors have suggested plans that could impact various parts of the EPA, an agency responsible for regulating pollution and protecting public health. The Office of Environmental Justice was formed from years of efforts to align civil rights with environmental protection.

This office plays a crucial role in ensuring that regulations on air and water safety consider the effects on marginalized communities. It also enforces aspects of the Civil Rights Act related to environmental harm.
