Exciting Times for Concordia University Irvine Women’s Water Polo!
For the first time, the Concordia University Irvine (CUI) women’s water polo team is making waves as they enter the national rankings, proudly standing at No. 22, according to the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA). This achievement marks a historic moment for the program!
CUI is riding a high, entering the NCAA Tournament on a nine-game winning streak and having secured 11 wins out of their last 12 matches. Their recent success includes a thrilling victory at the WWPA Conference Championships, where they clinched the title with a nail-biting 4-3 win over Biola.
The Golden Eagles have been tested, competing against several ranked teams this season. Notably, they triumphed over then-No.19 UC Santa Barbara in a closely contested match, winning 13-12. Their schedule also included challenging games against nationally-ranked teams like LMU and Hawaii, both of whom are part of this year’s NCAA Tournament.
CUI is set to face No. 17 Wagner in a crucial play-in game on Wednesday, April 22, at 6 p.m. PT. The stakes are high—winning this match would propel them into the quarterfinals, where they would meet the tournament favorite, Stanford University.
All the excitement will take place at the UC San Diego’s Canyonview Pool in La Jolla. For those looking to catch the action, live statistics will be available for free, and the game against Wagner can be streamed on ESPN+.
The NCAA Tournament showcases the top talents in collegiate water polo. In fact, participation in these tournaments can significantly impact player visibility and future opportunities, with many athletes aiming for careers beyond college. It also highlights the growing interest in women’s sports—recent studies show that women’s collegiate athletics are seeing increased attendance and support.
