Cone Health CEO Dr. Mary Jo Cagle will step down at the end of May due to a family health issue. She joined Cone Health in 2011 and became CEO in 2021, making history as the first woman and physician to hold the position.
During her tenure, Cagle guided Cone Health through significant challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic. She was instrumental in building a partnership with Risant Health, which aims to invest up to $1.7 billion into Cone Health to enhance its services and promote value-based care. Risant, established by nonprofit leader Kaiser Permanente, focuses on improving healthcare access while prioritizing quality.
As her time at Cone Health comes to an end, Cagle has received recognition as one of Modern Healthcare’s Leading Women of 2025. She has also been named a Grassroots Champion by the American Hospital Association and recognized as one of the 50 Most Influential Clinical Executives by Modern Healthcare.
Bernard “Bernie” Sherry, currently the interim chief operating officer, will take over as interim CEO starting June 1. A nationwide search for a permanent CEO is underway. Sherry has a strong background in healthcare leadership, previously serving as CEO at Ascension Wisconsin, which manages 16,000 employees and a network of hospitals and clinics.
Under Cagle’s leadership, Cone Health has received accolades for its exceptional care. It was ranked one of the best hospitals for equitable access by U.S. News & World Report, and its Moses H. Cone Hospital was listed as one of the top hospitals in North Carolina by Business North Carolina.
"I’ve been honored to lead this system," Cagle said. "I’m proud of what we’ve accomplished to improve patient care and access." Dr. Yun Boylston, chair of the Cone Health Board of Trustees, praised Cagle for her outstanding leadership and the positive impact she has had on the community.
As of 2024, Cone Health reported a revenue of $3.14 billion and employs over 13,000 staff across more than 150 locations. Cagle earned approximately $1.7 million in 2023, according to nonprofit tax filings.
