At least two tornadoes hit southeast Michigan early Wednesday, causing damage to homes, businesses, and a school. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.
In Ann Arbor, an EF1 tornado struck around 1:44 a.m. with winds reaching 110 mph. It touched down near Jackson Avenue and Interstate 94. As it moved southeast, it damaged trees and light poles, and even ripped part of the roof off a local school. The strong winds also affected the University of Michigan’s Yost Ice Arena, causing more roofing damage.
The tornado continued through several neighborhoods before lifting around 1:46 a.m., traveling 1.7 miles in just two minutes.
Just after that, another EF1 tornado appeared in Lincoln Park, around 2:14 a.m. This one had winds of up to 95 mph and cut a path about 0.3 miles long. It damaged roofs and storefronts on Ruth and Wall avenues before dissipating roughly two minutes later.
In addition, other tornadoes were reported across Michigan. One EF1 touched down north of Otsego, causing significant tree damage and impacting several barns and homes. Similar strikes were confirmed in Saginaw County and Shiawassee County.
Experts say tornadoes are becoming more frequent due to climate change. The National Weather Service highlights that warmer temperatures can fuel severe storms, increasing tornado risks in certain areas. According to a recent study by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the Midwest has seen a noticeable uptick in tornado events over the past decade.
Social media users reacted quickly to the storms, sharing videos and photos of the aftermath. Many residents expressed relief that no one was hurt, while others raised concerns about property damage and recovery efforts.
