KILLEEN, Texas — Residents on the North side of Killeen face a real challenge: getting to a grocery store. Driving takes 15 to 20 minutes, and for those without cars, it can mean an hour and a half on foot, as Anjali Arthur points out.
Back in 2019, this area was labeled a food desert after local stores like H-E-B and IGA closed. Anjali recalls how convenient it used to be. Now, older folks, especially those without transportation, struggle to find food.
Leo Arnelis, another resident, shares his experience pushing his elderly mother in a wheelchair to buy groceries. He describes his journey as a real workout, often taking 40 minutes just to reach a store. It’s not easy for anyone, especially those who rely on public transport, which has been reduced.
Michael Thompson, owner of Pull Up and Eat #2, sees the effects of this food gap daily. With few grocery options in the area, many locals turn to his restaurant after work. Thompson notes, “Busy hours are from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., and people come here because they don’t have anywhere else to go.” He explains that limited bus service makes it even harder for residents to access fresh food.
In 2019, there were talks of a Walmart opening nearby, but the lot remains empty. Anjali expresses frustration over it, especially since fast food isn’t a healthy option. “I have diabetes. We need to eat properly, but that’s just not happening here,” she says.
Food insecurity like this is not just a local issue; it’s part of a larger trend across many urban areas. According to recent data, nearly 10% of households in the U.S. live in food deserts, lacking easy access to fresh, affordable foods.
This situation highlights the importance of community discussions and planning for better access to groceries. Residents are resilient, but without changes, many will continue to suffer from poor nutrition and health issues.
