Congratulations, Coach! Bill Raftery of FOX Sports Sends Heartfelt Message to Tom Izzo

Michigan State men’s basketball coach Tom Izzo recently made history by surpassing Bob Knight’s Big Ten record for most wins. On a notable Saturday night, the 11th-ranked Spartans triumphed over Illinois with a score of 79-65. Interestingly, Izzo’s journey began with his first Big Ten win being against Knight’s Indiana Hoosiers back in January 1996.

Bill Raftery, a well-known college basketball analyst, has been a longtime friend of Izzo. He witnessed his career flourish since Izzo was an assistant coach under Jud Heathcote. Raftery shared his heartfelt congratulations to Izzo for this significant achievement.

Dear Tom,

Congratulations on becoming the winningest coach in Big Ten history. This is a remarkable achievement, and it’s hard to believe considering where you started as an assistant.

Your passion and commitment to basketball have been inspiring. I remember when you first took over as head coach. You were driven and focused. While Jud and I enjoyed our time, you were busy studying and analyzing the game. I knew you were on the path to greatness.

I’ll always remember the time your Spartans played Iowa State for a chance at the Final Four. After Iowa State’s coach got ejected, you went up to him and handled the situation with respect. That’s a rare quality, and it shows how much you’re respected across the sport.

Your simplicity and humility stand out to everyone who knows you. When you took your team to Northern Michigan for an exhibition game this season, the affection you shared with your alma mater was evident. It was touching to see the bonds you have with your former teammates and the community.

You’ve been an outstanding coach and a true friend. We’ve been through ups and downs together, and I cherish the trust we’ve built over the years.
