Congress MP Randeep Surjewala Calls Out Unacceptable Bartering of National Interests for Trade Deals

Randeep Surjewala Critiques India-US Trade Deal as a Threat to Farmers

New Delhi: Congress MP Randeep Singh Surjewala recently voiced strong opposition to the India-US Trade Deal, claiming it jeopardizes India’s national interests. He stated that trading agreements should foster economic growth without compromising sovereignty. In his view, the welfare of the Indian people must remain a priority.

Surjewala emphasized that the deal could harm the livelihoods of India’s farmers, particularly by allowing imports of American agricultural products. He noted that the agreement’s opening point involves permitting these imports, which could flood the market and hurt local producers.

He highlighted that India, with a maize production of 43 million metric tons, stands to be significantly affected by American imports, especially considering the U.S. produces over 425 million metric tons annually. This creates a potential threat to Indian farmers who may struggle to compete with cheaper American goods.

Critically, Surjewala raised questions about the deal’s fairness, suggesting that it seems skewed toward U.S. interests. He pointed out that the Modi government aims for a trade increase to $500 billion, but this, he argues, leans heavily in one direction. In 2024, India exported $81 billion to the U.S. while only importing $43 billion, yielding a $38 billion surplus.

In light of these concerns, experts from the agricultural field share similar sentiments. A recent report by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research indicates that trade agreements like this can lead to long-term changes in local markets, often at the expense of local producers.

Ultimately, the future of this agreement will be closely watched as both public sentiment and political landscapes evolve. The voices of farmers and citizens could play a crucial role in shaping the outcomes of such international deals.
