Ujjain, India: As preparations for Simhastha 2028 heat up, the Indian government is launching a Vande Bharat Metro service to improve travel between Indore and Ujjain. This new service will run on existing railway tracks, making it easier and quicker for the expected surge of pilgrims.
Unlike traditional metro systems that need new tracks, the Vande Bharat Metro will utilize the current railway line. Officials have already tested speeds of up to 180 km/h. Once operational, it will run at about 160 km/h, reducing travel time between the two cities to around 40-45 minutes.
Indore MP Shankar Lalwani highlighted the need for this service, noting that over 300 trains will be operational during Simhastha. Known as the Namo Bharat train, it will help manage this passenger surge efficiently, offering modern travel options for both pilgrims and daily commuters.
The new service will consist of a 12-coach train with AC and non-AC options, designed for high capacity. With comfortable seating for over 1,150 passengers and space for nearly 2,000 standing, it’s tailored for large crowds. The first Vande Bharat Metro is expected to launch in Kashi before expanding to the Indore-Ujjain route.
Mrs. Mamta Shah, MD & CEO of Urban Infra Group, remarked, “This initiative blends high-speed rail with metro-style capacity. It’s a smart move that benefits both pilgrims during Simhastha and daily commuters. Using existing tracks saves money and speeds up the project.”
The Laxmibai Nagar Railway Station in Indore is also set for an upgrade, costing about ₹55 crore. This includes modernizing the station and building a new foot overbridge, aimed at improving passenger services before Simhastha 2028. The redevelopment is expected to complete by early 2026.
This Vande Bharat Metro is part of Indian Railways’ strategy to offer faster, efficient travel options. As both cities gear up for Simhastha 2028, this corridor could become a vital short-distance rail link in Madhya Pradesh, making journeys quicker and more comfortable for millions.
Interestingly, a 2023 survey found that nearly 70% of Indian travelers prefer modern train services for domestic travel, reflecting changing trends in transportation across the country. As such, the Vande Bharat Metro aligns perfectly with the evolving expectations of travelers.
